Here, one person (usually the PI or the corresponding author) carries the project, and every student, co-author and outside collaborator they invite gets full access at no cost. No collaborator caps, ever.

Early access is a period, not a promise of free forever: when billing starts you get 30 days' notice, the Free plan stays free for one owned paper, and research groups that joined during early access become founding labs and keep 50% off their first year of a paid plan.

Why is it free for people I invite?
Because the value of this tool is what happens between co-authors — the argument that's still attached to the assumption, the Catch Up after two weeks away. A paywall in front of your collaborators would kill exactly that. The person who owns the paper decides to pay once; nobody else ever hits a wall.
What exactly is the AI allowance — and what happens if I hit it?
One AI action is one press of an AI feature: a Catch Up briefing, a thread summary, a compile diagnosis, a reviewer-comment import, a drafted response paragraph. Paid plans include 500 actions per person per month — for scale, our heaviest real users do about 300. We publish the number instead of saying 'unlimited' because unlimited AI is a promise nobody selling it can keep honestly. If you do hit the ceiling, nothing breaks and nothing charges you extra: AI features switch to the free built-in helpers until the 1st, and a note tells you why. Need more? Plug your own API key into a project and pay your provider directly — that path has no ceiling from us. Papers, collaborators, compiles, exports: those are unlimited, full stop.
Can I keep a manuscript away from the AI entirely?
Yes. Any paper can switch the AI off in Settings → AI, and then nothing from that paper is ever sent to a model. With AI off, the paper still remembers everything and still briefs you; it just won't write anything for you — Catch Up, the reviewer tracker and compile help keep working from the record, while Ask the paper and AI drafts are unavailable. The other direction works too: a paper can run on your own API key with your own provider, which nobody here can read, never counts against the allowance, and has no ceiling from us. The plan price is the same either way — you're paying for the workspace and its memory, not for the model.
What is a Lab member — and who counts?
A member is someone the lab puts on the plan: up to ten people, each with everything a Researcher has — unlimited owned papers and their own AI allowance. Everyone a member invites to a paper is a co-author, not a member, and co-authors never count and never pay. So a ten-person lab pays $499 a year however many collaborators its papers have; the eleventh member costs $35 a year. If only one person in the group needs to own papers, a single Researcher plan already covers the other nine as free co-authors.
What happens to my free paper when I start a second one?
You'll be asked to upgrade to own a second active paper — that's the whole business model. Nothing you own is ever held hostage: the export button works on every plan, every day, and your first paper keeps working.
I'm a student.
The free tier is the full product for your first paper, and papers you're invited to don't count against anything. Student pricing arrives when billing does — until then, everything is free anyway.
Can I get my work out?
Always. Any project exports as a plain zip of LaTeX files at any time, and you can delete your account and its data from inside the app. Your manuscripts are yours.
